The UW Sustainability Summit celebrates the University’s leadership and accomplishments in environmental stewardship and sustainability. It provides the opportunity for students, faculty, and staff to find ways to get involved with sustainability on campus, and to learn about the Campus Sustainability Fund, the UW Climate Action Plan, and how our community partners play a role in helping UW remain a continued leader in sustainability. Join the climate change discussion panel at 5:30 featuring esteemed UW Deans and thought leaders: Lisa Graumlich (environment), Sandra Archibald (policy), and Kellye Testy (law), and moderated by UW Provost Ana Mari Cauce. Plus, get a sneak peak at the exciting new UWTV series, Climate of Change—a four-part series that shows how the UW is inspiring environmental change through ground-breaking research and innovative solutions. A reception will follow beginning at 7:00 PM in the Walker Ames Room.

Sandra O. Archibald, Dean of the Evans School of Public Affairs, Chair of the Environmental Stewardship Committee

Dean Sandra O. Archibald joined the Evans School of Public Affairs in 2003. Her research interests concern a wide area focusing on the intersection of economics, institutions, and public policy. Archibald is the recipient of the NASPAA/ASPA Distinguished Research Award of 2004; Humphrey Institute Outstanding Teaching Award of 1993; American Agricultural Economics Association Quality of Research Communication Award of 1989; University of California Department of Agricultural and Resource Economics Outstanding Dissertation Award of 1984; and numerous research grants. Archibald holds a Ph.D. in agricultural and resource economics from the University of California, Davis. She also holds an MA in public administration and BA in history from University of California, Berkeley.

Lisa Graumlich, Dean of the College of the Environment

Dr. Lisa J. Graumlich is the inaugural Dean of the College of the Environment at the University of Washington. As Dean, she leads a College with unparalleled depth and breadth in environmental systems: from the forests to the seas and from the depths of the earth to the edges of the solar system. As a scholar, Graumlich pioneered the use of tree-ring data to understand long-term trends in climate, focusing on the mountains of western North America. She is actively engaged with a broad range of stakeholders to understand the impacts of climate change on wilderness and natural areas. 

Kellye Testy, Dean of the School of Law

Kellye Y. Testy became the 14th permanent (and first woman) dean of the University of Washington School of Law in 2009. Her scholarship and teaching interests are in the areas of leadership, corporate/business law, and economic justice. A sought-after speaker, she is known throughout academic and legal communities for her dedication to the rule of law and its commitment to justice and equality. Dean Testy is active in a number of major legal organizations, including the American Bar Association, the Association of American Law Schools, the Association of American Law Deans, the Society of American Law Teachers, and the Law School Admissions Council. Her current scholarly projects include a casebook on corporate governance and a book on leadership. Under her leadership at UW Law, the school has adopted an ambitious mission as Leaders for the Global Common Good, increased the quality (including the diversity) of its student body, expanded interdisciplinary opportunities for students and faculty, and enhanced the scholarly accomplishments and reputation of its faculty. Dean Testy served as the Chair of the UW Presidential Search Committee, a Board of Regents’ appointment, and chair of the Board of Deans & Chancellors. She currently serves on the Executive Committee of the American Association of Law Schools.

Ana Mari Cauce, Provost and Executive Vice President

Ana Mari Cauce joined the University of Washington faculty in 1986 as an Assistant Professor after earning degrees in English and Psychology from the University of Miami in 1977, summa cum laude and with departmental honors, and a Ph.D. in Psychology, with a concentration in Child Clinical and Community Psychology from Yale University in 1984. Cauce holds a joint appointment in American Ethnic Studies, and secondary appointments in Gender, Women, and Sexuality Studies, and in School of Education. She has held numerous administrative positions at the UW, including Director of the UW Honors Program, Chair of American Ethnic Studies, Chair of Psychology, Executive Vice Provost, and Dean of Arts and Sciences. As Provost she is the University’s Chief Academic Officer, responsible for overseeing the education, research, and service missions in the Schools and Colleges and other academically oriented units. She is also responsible for resource allocation to maintain excellence throughout the University and to meet strategic goals. She also works closely with the President on strategic planning and long-term decision-making.

Bay Laurel Catering +Website
Bay Laurel Catering is located in Haggett Hall on north campus. They are as local as you can get. Bay Laurel supplies the majority of the grab and go sandwiches and salads we offer in our Express Markets and Cafes on campus. The sandwich wrap and the salad containers are compostable and products are delivered in hybrid powered vehicles. The Bay Laurel grab and go operation employs over 50 UW Students. Keeping the carbon footprint low and supporting UW students is what it's all about.

UW Biodiesel Cooperative +Website
The Biodiesel Cooperative started as a project for a Human Center Design & Engineering class in 2010. Since then we have been funded and gained momentum and members. All our members believe that we can positively affect the University of Washington’s sustainability by converting waste to a valuable product. We are passionate about alternative energy and are striving to ensure that it becomes a feasible option for our future.

Campus Sustainability Fund +Website
The CSF is a student-funded and student-run grant giving organization for sustainable projects on the UW campus. Our goal is to create a sustainable campus and foster an environmentally conscious culture by funding student-led projects that lessen the University of Washington's environmental impact.

Community, Environment & Planning +Website
Community, Environment, and Planning is a self-directed, diverse undergraduate major comprised of students, faculty, and staff, engaged in holistic growth and a collaborative process of experiential and interdisciplinary learning. In our major, develop skills, techniques, and knowledge necessary to be active leaders and conscientious planners in our communities and environments. Implementing sustainable communication structures on campus such as 12 new scan stations placed for students this year to enable a paperless option (save to USB or email), Convio email support enabling electronic communications, Mailing Services green truck fleet, and Reduction of Junk Mail.

Custodial Services (Building Service Department)
We will provide highlights from our practices, equipment, and products instrumental in our earning the (Grand) "Green Cleaning Award for School & Universities" in 2007 and 2010.

Earth Club +Website
Earth Club leads sustainability initiative around campus, centered on building community with hikes, recreation, and volunteering. We also attempt to bridge the sustainability gap through our Ackerley funded Empowered Eco-Education project, engaging urban youth with nature in South Park.

UW Environmental Innovation Challenge/Buerk Center for Entrepreneurship +Website
If you’ve got a passion for cleantech and the desire to make an impact, the UW Environmental Innovation Challenge is for you. In the EIC, interdisciplinary student teams define an environmental problem, design a solution, produce a prototype, and create a business summary that demonstrates market opportunity and potential for impact. Cleantech environmental innovation is any product, process or service that reduces waste, minimizes energy consumption, and contributes to a healthier planet. Re-use/recycling, water usage, energy generation, green consumer products, bio & nano technology — all are ripe for innovation.

Grounds Management +Website
Grounds Management is implementing a green waste composting program, scheduled to begin composting operations this October 2013. UW Grounds maintains a salvage wood and arborists chip program to divert green waste from the waste stream. The department adheres to an Integrated Pest Management Plan for decreasing reliance on chemical control of pests.

UW-IT has increased data center capacity by making more efficient use of costly space, power, and cooling. A rapid "dense computing" project will build on that effort by deploying the latest hardware and expanding use of virtualization. The data center team has recently applied to the EPA to receive ENERGY STAR certification for the Tower data center. UW-IT is an active participant in the Green Office Certification program. First time assessment yielded four of our facilities with bronze certification and one with silver, our goal is to improve upon each one.

The Intercollegiate Athletics Department runs a number of sustainability outreaches at various events though out the year. Some include promoting proper sustainability practices in The Zone at all football games and hosting information tables at soccer and volleyball matches.

UW Recycling is committed to providing unique and innovative recycling, composting and waste reduction programs for the campus community. We have a stated goal of 70% waste diversion by 2020 and collaborate with UW students, faculty and staff on programs that will help us reach that goal!

Students Expressing Environmental Dedication (SEED) +Website
SEED is an Housing & Food Services organization that operates through the residence halls. We cover a myriad of topics regarding sustainability, including campus clean-ups, compost/recycling education, gardening at our own p-patch, etc.

Surplus +Website
UW Surplus proudly supports the University of Washington's commitment to sustainability through continued efforts to recycle, sell, or auction the greatest percentage of surplus goods from all departments and the Medical Center. Celebrating over a decade of sales to the public in addition to service to government agencies, non-profit organizations, and UW departments, UW Surplus champions its core values of repurpose, reuse, and recycle every day. That's purple being green!

The University of Washington has a farm where crops are grown year round and then sold on campus to UW Dining. You can find UW Farm produce at the District Market and at Cultivate. Come meet Sarah Geurkink, the UW Farm manager and the student volunteers that work the farm.

Blazing Bagels +Website
Blazing Bagels is committed to purchase 100% of it's flour product from Shepherd's Grains, a group of more than 40 local farmers. Each of the farmers are helping make for a healthier planet by revolutionizing the way grain is grown and sold. This is done by a no -till and crop rotation system which prevents erosion and water pollution. The bagel production facility is located in Redmond, Washington. Come meet the owner, Dennis Ballen, and sample real food.

In 2012, Evening Magazine named Blue C Sushi as the best sushi restaurant in Seattle. This past year we started bringing in Blue C Sushi for our gab and go take out line. Blue C sources seafood for their sushi that is sustainably caught.

Cedar Grove Composting +Website
The University of Washington and Cedar Grove Composting have been working together for years to strive toward zero waste and divert food and beverage waste away from landfills to composting. Cedar Grove has been a global leader on approving compostable food and beverage containers for composting and has been a major player in UW Dining's waste diversion program. We started our first food service front of the house compost collection program in February of 2007 and the program has grown exponentially on campus thanks to Cedar Grove's support.

Honest Tea and their brand team have been sampling on Red Square for the past several years and they know how to do it right to be a zero waste partner. They collect all of their bottles for recycling and sample their drinks using compostable cups. And their teas are all Organic. Please visit them on Red Square and say hello to the new NW Marketing Manager, Elliot Dee and let him know we appreciate the efforts Honest Tea puts forward to be a good steward of the environment.

InterConnection +Website
InterConnection provides companies across the U.S.. with free, certified and secure electronics recycling and data destruction. Reusable computers are refurbished and go out to support other nonprofits, students and low-income families.

Keeney's Office Supply | Office Interiors +Website
Keeney’s Office Supply | Office Interiors have been leaders in the sustainability arena for many years and have worked with numerous government agencies and private businesses to help them achieve cost and carbon savings with regards to office supply procurement. Keeney’s developed an internationally recognized Green Office Supply Program in 2008 in cooperation with the City of Seattle. This program has developed and grown over the years into a multifaceted resource to anyone wishing to operate on a more sustainable business level. Keeney’s has been recognized with various green awards for outstanding green business practices, winning the Top 50 Green Business Award in 2012 and 2013, the King County Waste Prevention and Reduction award in 2011, 2012, 2013 and the Environmental Excellence Award in 2012. Just this year, Keeney’s became a zero waste facility at its Redmond location.

Marine Stewardship Council +Website
Purchasing seafood that comes from fisheries that harvest fish sustainably is an important part of a sustainable food system. The Marine Stewardship Council has been in the business of certifying sustainable seafood for years. The MSC certification on the package or in the fish case helps ensure that the customer is getting fish that was harvested from the sea sustainably. Visit the MSC table on Red Square and learn more.

Medosweet Milk +Website
Medosweet sources all of it's milk for the UW locally, from Western Washington dairies. My favorite way to describe just how fresh the milk is: "The cows are milked on Sunday and we have the milk in our coolers on Wednesday." We use Medosweet milk in all of our espresso bars and production facilities. Many of our food providers use Medosweet as well, making that local and sustainable connection. Medosweet milk is antibiotic and steroid free. Come to Red Square and meet the team from Medosweet and drink Milk!

If you were at Dawg Daze on Red Square for the first two days of classes, you would have noted that the longest sampling lines were for Odwalla. Please join us to sample Odwalla juice and bars. Odwalla has a great sustainability program. From water conservation, to their Plant - A - Tree program to the strides they have made with their bottle, Odwalla is doing it right.

Office Depot +Website
Office Depot has been named America's Greenest Large Retailer by Newsweek Magazine for three consecutive years (2010-2012). In 2011, Office Depot launched its GreenerOffice Delivery Service that gives customers a greener option of receiving their office supplies in paper bags instead of cardboard boxes.

Pinks Bakery 
Pinks Bakery, located in Kent, Washington, has been a partner with us for many years. They made the switch to using Shepherd's Grain flour for all of their bakery items, including the donuts. When I am munching on my maple bar, I am supporting our family owned wheat farmers in Eastern Washington that are using no till farming methods to grow wheat. Please stop by and try the donut samples on Red Square and say hello to Mark Forsythe, the General Manager of Pinks.

Did you know that the UW campus is Salmon-Safe certified. Come meet Alex Ko, Salmon Safe & Special Projects Manager and his colleagues, and learn about collaborative efforts in the Puget Sound area to maintain and improve our salmon habitat for generations to come.

We will bring sample composting systems and a demonstration worm bin, as well as information on composting at home and recycling.

Sequential Pacific Biodiesel +Website
All of our used cooking oil at the UW is picked up by Sequential Pacific Biodiesel, pre-processed in South Seattle, with the process completed in Salem, Oregon. Sequential also picks up used cooking oil for Husky Stadium, Safeco Field, Century Link Field, the Pike Place Market, Children's Hospital, Taco Time in the NW and Burgerville. You can fill up with their biodiesel not far from the UW campus just north of the University Village. Our campus sends over 4,000 gallons of used cooking oil annually to Sequential for conversion to biodiesel.

One of our most sustainable vendors is Theo Chocolate. Located in neighboring Fremont, Theo provides us with Fair Trade Organic chocolates. You can find Theo Chocolate in all of our Cafe locations on campus. If you love chocolate, we will see you on Red Square.

Wilcox Family Farms +Website
We are a cage free egg campus thanks to Wilcox Family Farms. The farm is located at the foot of Mt. Rainier outside of Roy, Washington. The glacier fed Nisqually River runs through the farm. The farm is located within the Nisqually Land Trust and is Salmon Safe certified. The eggs are cage free and Humane Certified. Come join us for an omelet and feel good about eating eggs from happy chickens.
