The UW Botanic Gardens are an international hub for plant science and ecosystem research, teaching and stewardship. It is known for its nationally renowned living plant collection – containing more than 11,000 specimens.

The Botanic Gardens was established in 2005 with the aim of uniting the gardens and programs of Washington Park Arboretum and the Center for Urban Horticulture. The 230-acre arboretum houses many rare plants, and is open to the public free of charge. The Center for Urban Horticulture includes administrative offices, research labs and the Elisabeth C. Miller Library, one of the most important horticultural libraries in North America.

The Botanic Gardens emphasize sustainable practices throughout their programs. In addition to composting, recycling, and using electric work carts, the gardens boast the first LEED-certified building on campus (Merrill Hall at the Center for Urban Horticulture), practice Integrated Pest Management, and contribute to UW’s Salmon-Safe certification.
