The fall quarter class Food and the Environment (C ENV110) is open to all students and has no prerequisites. In this course, Students will relate the production and consumption of food to the major areas of environmental science including energy use, water consumption, biodiversity loss, soil loss, pollution, nutrient cycles, and climate change. The course will study the basic science and how food production impacts the key processes.
Atmospheric Sciences (ATMS) 111 will give students a board overview of the science of global warming. The class is open to all students, and will discuss the causes, evidence, future projections, societal and environmental impacts, and potential solutions to global warming. Students will also study the debate on global warming with a focus on scientific issues.
The Buerk Center for Entrepreneurship is again offering two practicum courses this fall focusing on innovation - the Environmental Innovation Challenge and the Health Innovation Challenge practicums.
The student group UW EcoReps works with the Greek community at UW to promote sustainability. EcoReps has created a Green Greek representative program to bring students from houses across the Greek community together to find opportunities in houses, on campus and beyond. Two sustainability-focused groups at the University of Washington, UW-Solar and the Green Greek Representative Program, are collaborating on a project that has sunny prospects and dazzling potential. Essentially, the two groups will be working together to determine opportunities for solar power in the UW Greek Community.

The UW Botanic Gardens is hosting the 8th annual Urban Forest Symposium on May 17: "Sustaining the Urban Forest During Densification."
Jessica Kaminsky is an Assistant Professor in the Civil and Environmental Engineering Department at the University of Washington. A scholar of engineering projects and organizations, she conducts research on infrastructure for developing communities with a particular interest in topics of social sustainability.
