If you haven't heard, Earth Day is here! Wednesday the party will fill Red Square with exhibitors, music, speakers and awards. There's also a ton of other Earth Day-related events happening this week, which you can find here.

But Earth Day isn't the only thing that's happening on campus. As usual, there are plenty of other sustainability-related events going on throughout UW. All of these events and more are listed on our Sustainability Events calendar, where you can find the full details for all events and any last-minute additions. Wednesday, April 22nd: Earth Day!

  • Yesler Swamp will be holding a work party on Earth Day! Bring shoes and clothes that can get dirty/muddy (prepare for rain), in addition to a water bottle and a snack. Tools and gloves are provided. (Center for Urban horticulture 9 a.m. -12 p.m.)
  • The centerpiece of UW's 2015 Earth Day Celebration will take place on Red Square on April 22. Enjoy music while you learn about environmental efforts on campus, taste test sustainable food options and hear from speakers about the importance of environmental stewardship and sustainability. (Red Square, 10 a.m. - 3 p.m.)
  • The UW is teaming up with the WA Conservation Corps to removed old landscape fabric from a 5+ year-old planting project along University Slough. The native plants look fabulous despite being suffocated by black plastic their whole life. After we removed the landscaping fabric, the young native plants should flourish even more and continue to create important shade and soil stabilization along University Slough. (University Slough between Golf Driving Range and IMA field #1, 10 a.m. - 3 p.m.)
  • Head over to UW Bothell for the annual Earth Day Fair! Learn about ways to get involved with local organizations and campus groups! What is being done in the area to promote sustainability, and what can you do to help! (UW Bothell Plaza, 10:30 a.m. - 3 p.m.)
  • UW Tacoma Earth Day Celebration. Raising awareness in the UWT/Tacoma community around Active Transportation being an action that everyone can participate in. Be a Planeteer and help your community win the battle against climate change. (Prairie Line Trail, 12 - 2 p.m.)
  • UW Farm Volunteer hours (Mercer Court, 1:30 - 5 p.m.)
  • SEFS Spring 2015 Seminar Series. Come listen to speaker Spencer Wood, Senior Scientist, Natural Capital project speak on “Social media as data on impacts of environmental change on nature-based tourism and recreation" (Anderson Hall 223, 3:30 - 4:30 p.m.)
  • Environmental Justice: Why women of color need to lead the environmental movement This panel and discussion will feature women activists and scholars talking about the importance of frontline communities being engaged in the environmental justice movement. It will be an interactive dialogue where the audience can ask questions and in the end there will be an open mic where people are invited to express their feelings about the environment creatively. (Ethnic Cultural Center Room 1, 5:30 - 6:30 p.m.)

Thursday, April 23rd

  • Farm education at the UW Farm. Join us for an hour of discussion and learning about various topics related to farming: from plant families and soil health, to the business of farming, tool maintenance and repair, and season extension… and everything in between! This weeks topic: soils, measuring and modifying organic content. (Botany Greenhouse, 8:30 - 9:30 a.m.)
  • Join the Recreational Fisheries: Science, Management, and Policy class again and hear guest lecturer Lorraine Loomis, chairwoman and Mike Grayum, executive director of the Northwest Indian Fisheries Commission talk about “Tribal Perspectives on the Management of Fisheries in Washington State: Shared Interests, Common Goals, and Outlook for the Future.” (Fishery Sciences 102, 10:30 - 11:30 a.m.)
  • Want to learn about the Campus Sustainability Funds (CSF) projects in action around the UW campus while riding a bike? Come on the bike tour hosted by the CSF. (Pronto Bikeshare Station, 15th Ave. NE & W Stevens Way NE, 1:30pm-2:30pm)
  • At UW Bothell there is a citizen engagement workshop.If you are Ready to get involved with environmental policy after Earth Day, join professors Martha Groom and Karrin Klotz, alongside Seth Balhorn of the Sierra Club, for an engaging session on how to get involved locally with environmental policy! (UW Bothell Husky Hall Room 464, 3:30 - 5:30 p.m.)
  • Come listen to Alan Hastings from UC Davis speak about “Dynamics in the sea: Marine Reserves” (Fishery Sciences 102, 4 p.m.)
  • Climate activism 101. Join us for an evening of skill and information sharing about how Washington can lead the nation on climate action and what you can do NOW to help. (Wallace Hall Program on the Environment Commons, 5:30 p.m.)
  • UW Science Now: Exploring the Efficiency of Biofuel Production; Environmental Impacts of Washington Biofuels. Tickets are $5 or Free with UW student ID (Downstairs at Town Hall, 1119 Eighth Avenue, 6 p.m.)

Friday, April 24th

  • Join the Society for Ecological Restoration and Campus Sustainability Fund for a Earth Week work party! The CSF will be giving away reusable water bottles, and SER will provide free food for volunteers! (near Paccar Hall, 12 - 4 p.m.)
  • UW farm Volunteer Hours (Center for Urban Horticulture, 2 - 5 p.m.)
  • Earth Day Pizza Bake! Bring toppings to share or a couple of bucks to help us cover our dough costs, and join The UW Farm to celebrate Earth Week! Everyone is welcome, so bring friends! (Botany Greenhouse, 4-7 p.m.)
