As part of RecycleMania, UW Recycling hosted a Trash Art Contest where UW students and staff submitted art pieces made of trash, recyclable and salvage materials. Three winners were chosen based on the criteria of: originality/creativity, theme of sustainability, material usage and relevance to personal and/or UW campus waste.

UW's 2019 Earth Week events included a focus on action, equity, diversity and environmental justice. The central event was Earth Day 2019 on April 22 at the Husky Union Building.
UW’s annual Earth Day celebration is coming up Monday, April 22, and the student planning committee is looking for volunteers to help out before, during, and after the event, as well as to table during the week leading up to Earth Day. Volunteers are not required nor expected to volunteer during the entire duration of the event.
The College of the Environment's Office of Diversity, Equity and Inclusion is hosting "Intersectionality Project: UW Race & Equity / Earth Day." On April 15 in the Ethnic Cultural Center's Unity Suite at 1 - 2:30 p.m., a video featuring UW staff of color sharing their ideas on UW diversity, the environment and Earth Day from race & equity perspective will be screened.

The Earth Day planning committee is hosting a design contest open to all UW students, faculty, staff, and alumni which may inspire this year's Earth Day promotional materials. Applicants are encouraged to submit a poster design for the event.

The UW Sustainability Action Network is looking for artists interested in showcasing work during the UW Earth Day celebration on April 20. The Earth Day event this year is focused on bridging the gaps between Environmental, Social, Economic and Political sectors to create an intersectional display of what sustainability means.

Jessica Kaminsky is an Assistant Professor in the Civil and Environmental Engineering Department at the University of Washington. A scholar of engineering projects and organizations, she conducts research on infrastructure for developing communities with a particular interest in topics of social sustainability.
