Graduation is just around the corner, which means it’s time for UW Recycling to gear up for two annual waste diversion events: Students Cleanup, Recycle and Moveout (SCRAM) and Husky Neighborhood Cleanup. Both programs capture unwanted items from thousands of students as they move out of residence halls and the north campus community that is home to Greek Row.

The goal of SCRAM is to divert reusable goods from the landfill (such as non-perishable food, emergency red backpacks, books, clothing, household items, school supplies and toiletries). Clearly, this is a big win for the environment. But the benefits don’t stop there: the donations that are acquired during SCRAM are sorted and distributed to local charitable organizations including Real Change, The Northwest Center and U-District Food Bank.
As the spring quarter comes to a close, donation stations are set up within each residence hall, which consists of instructional signage and collection containers to separate items. There is also space for donating large items like furniture and home theater equipment. In 2014, UW’s Seattle campus donated an impressive 17.9 tons of reusable items! Husky Neighborhood Cleanup
June 11, 12 and 15
17th Avenue NE & NE 47th Street
1-5 p.m. (or until trucks are full)
In an effort to help prevent illegal dumping within the residential neighborhood of north campus, trucks from Goodwill, UW Recycling and Waste Management gather for three days near Greek Row in order to provide free removal services for students. Be sure to bring your Husky ID with you!
Here’s a list of what will be accepted:
- Bulky items (furniture, mattresses and rugs)
- Electronic waste (TVs, computers, keyboards, etc.)
- Recyclable items (Cans, cardboard, metal, plastic and wood)
Please note: Unlike SCRAM, non-perishable food is not accepted at this site.
