Explore UW's history of sustainability

The UW Sustainability office is launching a timeline of University of Washington's achievements and milestones in sustainability and environmental stewardship. The project, "A Century of Sustainability," includes entries dating back to the earliest days of the current UW site in 1895 and includes highlights up to the present day. We are excited to share that UW Environmental Stewardship & Sustainability is now UW Sustainability! We updated our name to help us make better connections with the UW community while keeping sustainability as the focal point of our name and consistent with the University’s sustainability brand, “Sustainability: It's in our nature.”

One month left for Husky Green Award nominations

The Husky Green Awards recognize the top sustainability superstars at the University of Washington, but we need your help to find them!

There's less than one month left to nominate your environmental role model for a Husky Green Award. Students, faculty, and staff from any of the UW campuses are eligible, and any member of the UW community can submit a nomination before March 20, 2015

UW wins Green Cleaning Award

The University of Washington has been awarded the 2014 Grand Award for Higher Education in the Green Cleaning Awards by American School & University magazine. This is the third time the UW has been honored with a Green Cleaning Award - the university also won the Grand Award in 2007 and a Co-Grand Award along with the University of Georgia in 2010.

UW takes Gold for being Bike Friendly

The University of Washington was recently named a Gold level Bicycle Friendly University by the League of American Bicyclists, putting UW among just 12 schools nationwide to earn a Gold or Platinum rating.

"This is a conversation that is happening at campuses and in communities across the U.S. and the University of Washington is proud to be taking the lead," UW Transportation Services Director Josh Kavanagh said.

Seattle Business Magazine honors UW sustainability

The Seattle Business Magazine has named the University of Washington the winner of the 2014 Community Impact Award for Sustainability in Business Operations.

"This award reflects the terrific work by the entire UW community over the past decade," UW President Michael K. Young said. "As Seattle Magazine noted in its announcement, the UW has backed up its ‘bark’ about sustainable practices ‘with plenty of bite.'"
