EcoReps has a large presence in the UW Greek Community, and we would like to highlight chapters that are making exceptional efforts to be more sustainable. This week we'll shine the spotlight on the Sigma Kappa sorority.
Nationally, Sigma Kappa has a huge focus on sustainability as is apparent with their Inherit the Earth program which encourages members to live greener lifestyles, so it makes perfect sense that their UW chapter is one of the first chapters to install a Sustainability Chair position. Sophomore Tali Haller currently holds the position, whose job is to educate chapter members on sustainable lifestyles, encourage sustainable habits, and install sustainable infrastructure such as LED light bulbs, educational and instructional signage, and compost and recycle bins.
On top of all of the internal moves they are making with an eye on sustainability, Sigma Kappa will also be volunteering at the “UW Farm to Table Event” on October 22nd, which seeks to raise awareness about eating local, an important aspect of living more sustainably.
Sigma Kappa scored very highly in EcoReps' Green Greek Certification program, which is a survey for Greek chapters to audit their sustainable operations. If your chapter is interested in becoming Green Greek Certified, follow this link for the questionnaire.
It is great to see Greek chapters making sustainable changes and we at EcoReps look forward to seeing what other chapters do this year!
