We here at EcoReps hope that your first couple weeks of school have been going excellently! For those of you who have not yet heard, let us give you a little update about where we are right now. This summer we have been hard at work, overhauling our program to change our focus to project development with the aim of making the UW campus more sustainable.

From taking showers to eating breakfast, individual actions can contribute to making UW more sustainable.

This week we finish out our “Meet the EcoReps” segment with our Green Greek Coordinator, Kiyomi Morris!

Today we continue our “Meet the Ecoreps” segment with our Marketing and Outreach Coordinator, Alex Huff! Alex is from Woodinville, WA and is a Senior in the Program on the Environment here at UW. He is also a member of the Phi Kappa Psi fraternity where he holds the position of philanthropy chair. In his free time Alex enjoys playing music and exploring the vast world around him.

Over the next couple weeks we will be running a segment of blog posts called “Meet the EcoReps,” so you can get to know us a little better!

You may not have noticed, but as you walk around the UW campus more of those plants and flowers at your feet are species native to Puget Sound.

That’s because UW’s Society for Ecology Restoration student guild (SER-UW) native plant nursery has been working to restore areas on campus by increasing native species biodiversity and creating open spaces for students to engage with the natural world just steps from their residence halls. 

Within the College of Built Environments the urban planning real estate track will be offering a new sustainability focused class starting winter quarter 2016 ( R E 518). This three credit class will explore the best practices in sustainable real estate, analyzing at a macro level, the importance of sustainability in urban areas and introducing the best practices for various environmentally friendly and financially feasible interventions in the US and abroad.

The Washington Higher Education Sustainability Coalition (WAHESC) invites you to learn about cutting edge sustainability initiatives on campuses around Washington State in this first ever state-wide broadcast. The purpose of this event is to inspire, engage, and connect our regional higher education institutions during Earth Week. The broadcast on April 20th from 4:00pm-5:00pm will feature eight short presentations from staff and student sustainability advocates representing these projects:

To recognize Earth Day, the UW Combined Fund Drive and the Whole U are hosting the second annual Earth Day Challenge for UW faculty, staff, students and retirees from April 13-24. 

You can support 35 environmental nonprofits that work to preserve our planet by making a gift, donating your time and pledging to help the environment. The goal is to raise $2,000 by the April 24th deadline
