Campus Race to Zero Waste (CRZW), formerly RecycleMania, starts this week at the University of Washington. For the ninth year, the UW will be participating in the friendly recycling competition between colleges and universities. As part of CRZW, UW Recycling is organizing activities to focus on plastic waste reduction. Here are some ways you can get involved.

Participate in trivia week

Show off your recycling knowledge with our trivia week on social media! Watch UW Recycling's Instagram stories February 8 -12 for a chance to answer daily trivia. One person with the correct answer each day will be randomly selected to receive a giveaway!

Attend the Student SummitBeyond Waste Student Summits 2021

The Post-Landfill Action Network is hosting a Beyond Waste Student Summit this year focused on reducing single-use plastics on campuses. UW Recycling will be sending interested UW students to attend at no cost. To join, UW students need to fill out a pledge promising to attend the half-day Summit in its entirety, and provide feedback about the event to UW Recycling. This is a great opportunity for students interested in sustainability and zero waste!

The event takes place virtually on Saturday March 6 from 10 am – 2 pm PST. Interested students can fill out this pledge starting Monday February 15.

Get creative with trash

UW Recycling is excited to host another Trash Art Contest this year! The Trash Art Contest is a chance for students, staff and faculty to create an art piece based off items normally thought of as trash.

The contest accepts graphic arts, visual arts, and literature submissions. Due to campus activities taking place remotely, a photo of physical pieces, or a file upload of written or photography submissions will be accepted digitally. Art pieces should express feelings or ideas about waste, or a sustainability topic that relates to waste. Winners will receive $100 or $50 gift cards to a local art store or low waste shop. Submit your artwork here starting February 15. Submissions are due March 26, 2021.

About Campus Race to Zero WasteZero waste logo

Campus Race to Zero Waste 2021 (previously RecycleMania) runs for 8 weeks from February 1 to March 27. Over 1,100 colleges have participated nationwide! The UW's waste will not be tracked this year because most campus activities are remote. Instead the University will focus on promoting waste reduction for the case study competition.
