The UW International Forestry Students' Association (IFSA) was created just a year ago, but it's already grown into a robust community of environmental sustainability leaders, with more than 10 officers and 43 active members.
The UW arm of IFSA came into being when a group of students wanted to create a connection between UW students and the international environmental community. Since then, the student organization has traveled to the International Forestry Students' Symposium in the Philippines and the Global Landscapes Forum in COP21 Paris. The students who traveled to Paris were recognized by Governor Jay Inslee as "Washingtonians of the Day" after meeting them at a climate roundtable discussion hosted by the College of the Environment.
IFSA students are also hosting events for nearly every day of Earth Week, and all students are welcome. If you're interested in joining IFSA or learning more, the group is holding a general meeting at on Earth Day after a 4 p.m. movie screening of "KOMBIT: The Cooperative", a feature documentary film chronicling a five-year project to reforest Haiti, in Anderson Hall 227.
The Husky Green Awards recognize the top environmental leaders at the University of Washington. Individuals or groups from all UW campuses are nominated by faculty, staff and students. We'll be featuring many of the 2016 nominees on the blog this month. The winners will be announced on April 18, with an award ceremony during the April 22 Earth Day celebrations on Red Square.
