Tuesday gets started early at the SustainableUW Festival.
At 8:30 a.m. in Architecture 147, Nicole Faghin of Washington Sea Grant will talk on "Reducing the Impact of Shoreline Development in Puget Sound" as part of the Environmental Science and Resource Management Seminar: Water in the Pacific Northwest.
If your alarm isn't going off that early, you'll have an easier time making it to UW Surplus for their weekly public store hours (noon to 6 p.m.) - with extra SustainableUW Festival flair! UW Surplus (one of our excellent festival sponsors) will have an open house during store hours, so you can learn more about how they work to reduce waste at UW and find new homes for all kinds of things. You might even find something to take home with you. Head on over anytime in the afternoon. You'll find them in the Plant Services Building on the northeast of campus, next to University Village. If you want to get your hands dirty, head over to the UW Farm at Mercer Court for volunteer hours from 2 to 5:30 p.m.
UW's Program on Climate Change is hosting a talk on the impacts of Climate Change on Pacific Northwest agriculture at 3:30 p.m. in Ocean Sciences 425.
At 4 p.m. in Paccar 290, Jesse Morris of the Rocky Mountain Institute will be the guest lecturer for the Alaska Airlines Environmental Innovation Practicum lecture series. Morris will speak about his work with energy storage companies, smart control providers, utilities, and the regulatory community to help distributed energy resources become an integral, widely accessible part of the global electricity system.
The day's program will close with "Climate, Food and Race: Challenges for the Food Movement" at Architecture 147, 7 p.m. Eric Holt-Gimenez, director of Food First, will speak about the challenges for the food movement and will also join the Environmental Studies ENVIR 100 class to speak about climate change, food access and race. The event is hosted by Community Alliance for Global Justice and several UW departments including Anthropology, CHID, Geography, Landscape Architecture, Jackson School of International Studies, Program on the Environment, School of Public Health Nutritional Sciences Program and Urban Design and Planning.
