The Top 25 Award recognizes hospitals who are leading the industry with innovation in sustainability, demonstrating superior programs, and illustrating how sustainability is a core part of their culture. This is the ninth consecutive year for Harborview to receive the top award from Practice Greenhealth.

Q&A: Climate chaos implications, misperception

Howard Frumkin, dean of UW’s School of Public Health, is also a scientist who for 15 years has paid attention to health impacts of climate change. He sat for a Q&A recently to characterize the problems of climate change and the public’s response. (His well-used bike panniers were on the floor beside his chair.)

Q. Do you have a specific focus or point of passion regarding climate change?

A. I’m passionate in general about protecting people’s well-being and creating habitats in which we can thrive and our great-grandchildren can, too.

LEED Gold for UW Medicine Phase 3.1

The US Green Building Council recently awarded LEED gold certification to UW Medicine Phase 3.1 in South Lake Union. Green features of the 183,000-square-foot, seven-story building include a storm water cistern for irrigation, a heat-recovery chiller, high-efficiency boilers, exhaust air energy recovery and more. The project was financed through $165 million in tax-exempt bonds via the National Development Council. The building has space for more than 400 researchers in immunology, rheumatology, kidney research, infectious disease treatment and prevention, and vision sciences.
