Everyone is invited to join in a pair of upcoming work parties to restore Yesler Swamp, one of the few remaining swamps along Lake Washington. A group of UW Environmental Science students are organizing the volunteer opportunities on February 25 and March 3 from 10 a.m. - 2 p.m. as part of a capstone project. You can sign up here to be a volunteer.
What was once a bustling sawmill in the late 1800s is now home to more than 100 species of birds, turtles, ducks, and even a beaver family.
I’m talking about Yesler Swamp, one of the few true swamps remaining in Seattle and a unique part of Washington’s vanishing urban forest. It’s hidden in a grove of trees just east of the UW Center for Urban Horticulture, remaining a fairly unknown public area to this day.
Interested in getting out and working in the dirt this weekend? You're in luck! Saturday and Sunday there are ways for you to get out and help with campus efforts.
On Saturday, the UW Farm is having a work party at their Center for Urban Horticulture site, and just a stone's throw away the Yesler Swamp Project is also going to be working on restoration of the swamp area. Both events start at 10 a.m. For details see these links:
