The Washington Higher Education Sustainability Coalition (WAHESC) invites you to learn about cutting edge sustainability initiatives on campuses around Washington State in this first ever state-wide broadcast. The purpose of this event is to inspire, engage, and connect our regional higher education institutions during Earth Week. The broadcast on April 20th from 4:00pm-5:00pm will feature eight short presentations from staff and student sustainability advocates representing these projects:

The Husky Leadership Initiative continues their Leadership Firesides series with Lieutenant General Stephen Lanza, commander of Joint Base Lewis-McChord's (JBLM) I Corps. JBLM has been a sustainability leader in the Puget Sound region for many years along with other miliatary bases.

The 10th Annual Allen L. Edwards Psychology Lectures presents The Psychological Science of Inequity and Inequality. These free lectures discuss the latest research on factors affecting quality of life for underrepresented and non-majority individuals. As part of this popular series, notable experts from across the nation come to the University of Washington to co-present with faculty from the UW Department of Psychology.

V'Ella Warren, Senior Vice President of UW Finance & Facilities and Board of Regents Treasurer, was recently nominated in the Sustainability Hero category for the 2015 Sustainable Seattle Leadership Awards. Warren has been a champion, advocate, and sponsor of social responsbility cross campus for many years.

UW Research Associate Colleen Burge is quoted in a November 2014 Seattle Times article on the connection between climate change and ocean disease outbreaks in sea life. In the article As climate warms, more outbreaks of disease for sea life, journalist Craig Welch explores how rising sea temperatures may affect disease susceptibility and transmission in sea life ranging from dolphins and sea stars to coral, eelgrass, and seals.

UW News & Information recently reported on a new NOAA online tool, the IOOS (Integrated Ocean Observing System) Pacific Region Ocean Acidification Data Portal, that helps researchers and the fishing industry track ocean acidification in local waters and the open ocean.

On Thursday, November 20, 2014 Jodi Melamed, Associate Professor of English and Africana Studies at Marquette University presented an engaging and provocative lecture at UW Bothell (UWB) titled "What are the Stakes of What Diversity Means? Capitalism, Collective Existence, the University, and Beyond".

Blogger Jeffrey Marlow of WIRED's The Extremo Files recently spoke with Howard Frumkin, Dean of the UW School of Public Health and member of the UW Environmental Stewardship Committee on the intersection of climate change and public health. The result...a fascinating article that may surprise many regarding what lies ahead for us in what Dean Frumking calls "the biggest health challenge in the coming century." Marcelo Bonta, Executive Director of Center for Diversity & the Environment, was one of several keynote speakers at the 2014 Association for the Advancement of Sustainability in Higher Education (AASHE) conference in Portland, Oregon.
