UW Sustainability's weekly events banner.

There’s a whole new lineup of sustainability events this week, ranging from discussions on global warming and Seattle’s environmental history to a natural resources career fair. Some of the week's highlights are listed below, and you can find out even more items happening on campus with our full calendar. The full Sustainability Events calendar is the best place to find the most up-to-date listings and details on all events. Also, if you know of any events, please let us know. We’d love to add them to our calendar! And if you'd like to get a weekly email of all the upcoming sustainability events, subscribe here.

This Wednesday, I will be attending the "Putting People in Their Place: Seattle's Environmental History" seminar. Expect to find a detailed overview of the event later this week on our blog. My article will revolve around speaker Linda Nash's discussion on how the history of Seattle is closely tied to the natural materials people found in the Pacific Northwest and how the city's social, economic, political, and cultural life has been shaped by the movement of these resources. For those of you who would like to attend, the discussion is held at Kane Hall 130 from 7:30 to 9:00 p.m. Ticket prices: UWAA and UWRA members: $10, General admission: $12, UW students: $5. Register and purchase your tickets now.

Monday

From news stations to satirical political commentary shows, global warming has been debated endlessly on TV. Now, the global warming debate is coming to Seattle's Town Hall. Expert science writer Oliver Morton explores the promise and pitfalls of what some say is still a shaky science. He discusses how global warming is a problem created by humans and how we can also reverse it. He'll walk us through just how we can solve the issue of global warming. Doors open at 6:30 p.m., though the event starts at 7:30 p.m. Tickets are $5. You can purchase them on Town Hall’s website.

Tuesday

In need of furniture, electronics, and other cool stuff for a reasonable price?  The UW Surplus Store takes in items from all UW departments and medical facilities and sells them to the general public for a small fee. They are open every Tuesday, noon to 6 p.m.

Wednesday

The UW Sustainability office is hosting a Green Bag talk on Paper Reduction from 11:30 a.m. - 12:30 p.m. in Gerbderding 26. Bring your lunch and join Tim Stetter, Director of UW in the High School, and Emily Edmiston, Program Administrator for UW in the High School, as they will be sharing information about how they reduced paper usage in their program.

Over the past two decades, regional fires have become increasingly common in the Pacific Northwest, especially during very hot, dry summers. Join UW Professor Susan Prichard as she discusses the changing fire regimes in semi-arid forests of the inland Pacific Northwest, the record-setting wildfire events of 2014 and 2015, and recent research that can help prevent future wildfire fires. Lecture is held at John M. Wallace Hall at 12 p.m.

From 12:30 to 3:30 p.m. The Society of American Foresters UW Student Chapter is hosting a Natural Resources Career Fair in Anderson Hall 207. Both undergrad and graduate students will have a chance to learn about different companies, introduce themselves to potential employers, and practice their interviewing and networking skills. Among those who will attend are the Washington State Department of Natural Resources, the Unites States Forest Service, and King County Parks, and much more.

Organizers will be providing free refreshments and snacks, and there will be raffle drawings for goodies, ranging from gift cards, two free memberships to the Society of American Foresters, and two free memberships to The Wildlife Society! If you have any questions, please contact Marisa Bass at mbass14@uw.edu.
