Here are some highlights from our Sustainability Events calendar for the week of March 2, 2015. If you know of any events which should be added, let us know.

Monday

  • It's citizen science day! In the afternoon, the Wildlife Science Seminar looks at how to successfully utilize volunteers in research with "A framework for successful citizen science: good data and good relationships." (Smith Hall 120, 3:30 p.m.)
  • In the evening, the Botanic Gardens looks at how citizen scientist have helped take on invasive plants. (Center for Urban Horticulture Douglass Classroom, 6:30 p.m.) Update: this event has been canceled.
  • Join the UW Fam for a community potluck tonight at Mercer Court. Everyone is welcome, just bring a dish to share, dishware for yourself, and an appetite. (Mercer Court, 6:30 p.m.)

Tuesday

Wednesday

  • Wish you could experience a garage sale without leaving campus? You can, on the first Wednesday of every month! The HUB's lost and found sale is a great place to pick up a new water bottle, usb flash drive or pair of sunglasses while checking out the unpredictable array of items available this month. (The HUB information desk, 8 a.m. - 4:30 p.m.)
  • Learn about how you can raise mushrooms at this week's Farm Lunch lesson. (Wallace Hall 120, 12:30 p.m.)

Thursday

  • Join the UW Farm for an early morning breakfast potluck at 8 a.m., followed by the FarmEd information series at 8:30 and volunteer hours afterward. (Botany Greenhouse, 8 a.m.)
  • If you're interested in public health, there are two competing seminars at 12:30 on Thursday. At the Health Sciences Center, Dr. Peter Rabinowitz will talk about "A One Health Initiative for Washington State: Integrating Human, Animal, and Environmental Health" (Health Sciences D-209, 12:30 p.m.) At the same time at Alder Commons, Dr. Grace John-Stewart, director of the UW Global Institute for Integrated Health of Women, Adolescents and Children, will address "Maternal and Child Health Challenges in Developing Nations (Alder Auditorium 104, 12:30 p.m.)
  • John Garner, the chief operating officer at North Pacific Seafoods, is this week's speaker in the Bevan Series on Sustainable Fisheries (Fishery Science Auditorium, 4:30 p.m.)
  • The "Green German, Green Europe" film series hosted by the UW Department of Germanics is screening "More than Honey," a 2012 documentary that looks at honeybee colonies in California, Switzerland, China and Australia. The film is in German with English subtitles, and all are welcome to watch the film and participate in a Q&A discussion afterward. (Gould Hall 322, 6:30 p.m.)

Friday

  • The Campus Sustainability Fund gives grants to students for campus environmental projects. It's funded by students and the decisions are made by a committee of students. If you want to know how the decisions are made, anyone can sit in on a CSF committee meeting. (Gerberding Hall 142, 4 p.m.)
  • Want to know what guinea pigs and a Rottweiler have to teach us about the politics of food, development and race in modern-day Peru? Come out to the Henry Art Gallery for a talk on Animals, Culture and Politics in Peru. $20 at the door. (Henry Art Gallery Auditorium, 7 p.m.)
