Huskies for Equitable Sustainability (HuES) is a student-based program by UW Sustainability to connect students with sustainability projects that have an impact on campus, as well as a forum to connect and learn more about sustainability.
This is the second year HuES has been in existence, and it looks very different from the first year. Last year, the goal was to educate students about different sustainability aspects and effort. This Fall, HuES relaunched with strong momentum, with a strong group of engaged students taking on projects that will help shape the future of sustainability at the UW.
A few of the projects HuES has been working on so far this academic year include:
TheZero-Waste Pop-Ups team supported UW Recycling to host a successful Free Goods pop-up, building on the enthusiasm and participation generated by the inaugural Husky Free Goods store held during Dawg Daze.
The Reusable Cup Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) working group began a research partnership with Hemalatha Velappan, a UW doctoral candidate and research assistant, to evaluate the environmental impacts of the Reusable Cup Program at Alaska Airlines Arena. At the same time, HuES students volunteered as Reusable Cup Ambassadors at basketball and volleyball games, educating attendees and helping reduce recycling and compost contamination.
HuES also began planning for UW’s 2026 Earth Week through its newly formed Earth Week Committee. The students on the committee will collaborate with other students groups on campus to create events and programming around Earth Day and beyond.
HuES schedule
HuES also has its first student leadership team. These students have taken on the role of helping HuES grow and continue to evolve to best meet the needs of students who want to connect with campus sustainability. This year's leadership team is:
- Harrison Greenberg & Rian Aten - HuES Co-Chairs
- Sammy Laing - Communications & Outreach Chair
- Collin Rice - Projects & Operations Chair
- Hannah Billy & Kyliegh King - Collaborations Co-Chairs
- Natalie Lai - Earth Week Committee Chair
All students are welcome to join HuES. Meetings are held every other Tuesday at 6 p.m. in the HUB.
